Any of several grasses of the genus Aristida or Andropogon, having spiky awns which damage the fleeces of sheep.

Discovery Interior Africa I. ix. 237 The Boschmans have a peculiar mode of fishing in the 'Oup river; they make conical baskets of stick grass, which is as thick and hard as quills. 1893W.
