A globular protein complex consisting of three subunits (troponin C, troponin I, and troponin T) which is related to and occurs with tropomyosin in the thin filaments of muscle tissue and is important in the mechanism of muscle contraction.

(Tokyo) LIX. 425/1 Tropomyosin-like protein, or ‘native’ tropomyosin..has been shown to consist of two different proteins, viz., tropomyosin of Bailey type and a globular protein promoting the aggregation of tropomyosin, named troponin.1982Sci. Amer. June 52/3 Troponin c is probably found only in cardiac and skeletal muscle; the troponinlike protein in other tissues is calmodulin.
