The name formed from the initial letters of ‘Allied Military Government of Occupied Territory’, the title of an organization first set up in Sicily during the 1939–45 war. Abbrev. A.M.G.

Not long after AMGOT (Allied Military Government of Occupied Territories) first appeared in print it was denounced as an unprintable Turkish word. Immediately the War Department shortened the form to AMG (Allied Military Governments).
