[The name of A. J. I. Töpler (1836–1912), German physicist, who invented the pump in 1862.]
Töpler (or † Töpler's) pump: a pump in which the reservoir to be evacuated is connected by a glass tube containing a valve to a second reservoir, which in turn is connected by a flexible U-tube to a reservoir of mercury, so that lowering the last draws gas out of the first reservoir into the second and raising it expels gas from the second reservoir into the atmosphere.
