pantothenic acid: an oily, optically active carboxylic acid, HOCH2C(CH3)2CHOH·CO·NH(CH2)2COOH, which is widely distributed in plant and animal tissues (mainly in combined form as coenzyme A), is essential for the growth of yeast and certain bacteria, and is a member of the vitamin B complex.
