penacute, a. (n.) Heb. and Gr. Gram.|piːnəˈkjuːt|
[f. L. pēne (more correctly pæne) ‘almost, nearly’, before a vowel pēn + acute. In this instance formed directly after penultimate.]
Having an acute accent on the penultimate syllable; paroxytone. b. n. A word so accented. Hence penaˈcute v. trans., to accent acutely on the penultimate syllable.
1751Wesley Wks. (1872) XIV. 80 If [a word has an acute] on the last [syllable] but one, [it is termed] a penacute.1764W. Primatt Accentus redivivi 111 The Dorians penacuted verbs ending ον,..that is, provided they were third persons plural.1874A. B. Davidson Heb.
