A purple-black crystalline benzoquinone derivative, C₈H₈O₅, which is produced in cultures of the moulds Penicillium spinulosum and Aspergillus fumigatus.

XXXII. 689 Birkinshaw & Raistrick (1931) reported the isolation from cultures of strains in the Penicillium spinulosum Thom series of a new mould metabolic product which was unnamed at that time, but for which the name spinulosin is now proposed.1946[see fumigatin].1950L.
