[mod.L. f. Gr. (τρόπος) διάλληλος reasoning in a circle: see prec. (In mod.F. diallèle.)]
Reasoning in a circle; i.e. endeavouring to establish a conclusion by means of a proposition which is itself dependent on the said conclusion.
1837–8Sir W. Hamilton Logic xxvi. (1860) II. 51 The proposition which we propose to prove must not be used as a principle for its own probation. The violation of this rule is called the Orbis vel circulus in demonstrando,—diallelus.
Hence diaˈllelous a., involving reasoning or defining in a circle.
