A name for the sound [ŋ], orig. as it occurred in Ancient Greek when the letter γ preceded another γ, κ, χ, or a nasal consonant; a symbol standing for this sound in phonetic transcription.

Greek xxii. 88 Some would assume the guttural nasal, written γ, before µ and ν, on account of the traditional name agma; for in this name, a transposition of γάµµα, the sound itself ought according to them to occur.
