A compound of the beta-lactone class which is produced by the bacterium Streptomyces toxytricini, and is a natural inhibitor of gastric and pancreatic carboxyl ester lipase.

Antibiotics 40 1086 Lipstatin, a new and very potent inhibitor of pancreatic lipase (the key enzyme of intestinal fat digestion) was isolated from Streptomyces toxytricini.1989Guardian (Nexis) 1 Mar. A more important problem is that lipstatin inhibits absorption of the fat-soluble vitamins A,D,E, and K.2002Jrnl. Org. Chem. 67 2257 Three putative intermediates in the biosynthesis of the lipase inhibitor lipstatin were synthesized in stable isotope-labeled form and were added to fermentation cultures of Streptomyces toxytricini.
