Acta CCLXV. 70 Cleavage, for example, of a 50 000-dalton peptide into fragments of 44 000 and 6000 daltons, respectively, can clearly be detected... Such peptidolysis can be observed only after dissolution of the protein by the detergent, since separated peptide fragments otherwise tend to remain associated through hydrophobic interactions.
